The WHIL-Radio Reading Service, Comcast Cable of Mobile and the Mobile Register are partners in extending the accessibility of the Mobile Register to Mobilians who can not read print due to disability.
The Radio Reading Service can now be heard as audio on Comcast Channel 6 from 7:00-10:00 a.m. Monday-Friday. Comcast reaches 84,000 homes in Mobile County. Those tuning in will hear volunteers reading state and local news from the Register from 8:00-9:00 a.m., followed by editorials and columnists from 9:00-9:30 and the sports pages from 9:30-10:00. Early risers can hear articles from the Wall Street Journal from 7:00-8:00 a.m.
"We would like to thank Comcast and the Mobile Register for this opportunity to reach hundreds of visually impaired persons that we might not otherwise serve" says Radio Reading Service director Jonathan Adler.
"We depend on those unable to read print due to disability applying for the loan of a special radio in order to hear us. But many persons who lose their sight later in life due, for example, to macular degeneration, become depressed and don't pursue services and information that might help them maintain high levels of independence."
"Being available openly on Comcast Channel 6 will help many of these individuals find us and try our service anonymously. We will provide both audio and video information to help them use our service around the clock as well as to learn about other services that can help them adjust to being blind or seriously visually impaired.
"Comcast takes pride in responding to the needs of the community through making services like this available to our customers," said Debi Blattmann, Marketing Manager of Comcast of Mobile. "Our company is made up of your friends and neighbors right here in Mobile, and we constantly strive to respond to local needs by participating in events and services that benefit our city."
